The IT guy could write an email about the world ending, and the minute before it happened, someone would email saying, “Hey how come you aren’t keeping us posted on this end of the world thing??”

The IT guy’s e-mail would have “NOTICE ABOUT NETWORK DOWNTIME” in the subject header, and would have about four paragraphs of boilerplate text about the importance of following instructions precisely as indicated in the following message:
The network will be unavailable* starting: Wednesday at 3 p.m.
and continuing until: INDEFINITELY
due to: END OF THE WORLD
* Downtime may be shorter or longer than indicated, due to circumstances beyond the control of the IT department.
