Talking to Americans About Canada

Being a Canadian that visits America often is fun. We’re the stealth minority in the US. Telling someone you’re from Canada usually either earns a “cool!” or a silly joke about Canada that just shows how little Americans know about our culture. Well finally someone has uploaded the show where one Canadian comic makes college professors, politicians, celebrities and ordinary Americans look silly for it.
Someone’s uploaded a segmented version of Rick Mercer’s CBC special, Talking to Americans. Talking to Americans was a segment on the uproariously funny “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” CBC news/commentary show, in which Rick Mercer would go to the USA and ask Americans whether they believed that Russia should given the Chechens in Saskatechwan their freedom, or for help defending our national igloo, or for congratulations on legalizing insulin. This show is a national institution, but it has never been aggressively marketed to Americans. You’d be hard pressed to get a funnier outside look into the USA. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5

Do Canadians really think they are that important to the U.S.? Of course we know little about Canada. As a country, Canada is not as important as they think they are. To us and to the world they are kind of insignificant. Why would we care or know the difference between Guy Lafleur and Brian Mulroney? Or if you have seal hunt in Toronto. But I am flattered as an American that you care so much about what we think of you.

It seems no one is as important to the U.S, as the U.S is to itself.
It’s not that we think we are more important or less important than anyone else but the fact remains we are on your door step, a hop skip and a jump away (and I know how you treat your actual neighbors by building fences and buying more ammunition,) so really what can I expect from an ignorant American.
I’m glad your flattered that we sit on our couches Monday night and laugh our asses off at how brain-dead and self centered our American neighbors are.
Try traveling the world and feel the “insignificant ness” from our friends in Europe, Africa, China, Australia and so on. Try a little experiment, mention your Canadian in any one of those countries and see the warmth and hospitality you receive.
The fact that you said “Or if you have seal hunt in Toronto” really sums up this little rant of mine and puts a smile on my face. Thank you. (it’s something you say when you appreciate what someone has done), try it some time. I know it’s hard as an American
Cheers,
Marnie

Yeah, that’s right Patrick. You know everything that came out of Marnie’s mouth is smart and true and you can’t argue with it. So either get a brain or go to hell!

To Patrick McKee:
Do Canadians really think they are that important to the U.S.?
No, we don’t. We just get extreme pleasure in that American men go to the family reunion to meet women. That they think Canada doesn’t have access to the ocean, that having a Navy would be stupid as a result. That they think Canada has a National Igloo. Canada is the U.S. largest trading partner and they think the capital of Canada is Toronto. What the hell do they teach in U.S. schools?
